 FORWARD MOMENTUM

“I will make you fishers of men”

Sound familiar? Most of us don’t have degrees in theology but those words issued 2,000 years ago, by a dude called Jesus, should be everyday work principles for any one in radio on the air today.

Here’s the similarity.

What dose a jock do for the station when he or she opens the mike?

They:

·         Brand

·         Give information

·         Entertain

But most of all:

·         Keep your listeners with them as long as they can.

That’s what we call – ‘Hooking and Teasing’. Giving the listener a reason to stay with your station for the next 15 minutes, then the next, then the next…….Hear those ticks in the book?

Jocks are Fishers of Listeners

Every break we ‘Go Fishing’.

The bigger the bait, the more juicy the morsel you dangle, the more chance you have of hooking that listener over in to the next 15 minutes and …..Thank you very much”, there’s another tick in the book.

To do a break without any forward momentum, any hook or tease is like casting without the bait on the hook.

Your competitor is fishing with big fat wiggly worms. Your hook is bare. Who is going to make the catch?

This doesn’t work: “Up next music from Paris Hilton”

This does: “Up next the singer who found God in prison”

This doesn’t work: “The Secret Sound is next”

This does: “Hey what’s this sound? [play sfx]. Think you know what it is. Your chance to play The Secret Sound is just 5 minutes away”

Good Fishing Folks!
